So you have bought a new house and it is time for the big move. To save some money you have come to the decision that you will do the move yourself. There is certainly nothing wrong with this and it can be a most exciting time, but at the same time it can also be very stressful. To make it so it is a hassle free and no worry experience you need to do some planning.
If you have decided that that you are going to use professional movers you still need to have a good plan in place. Assuming you are going to do the move yourself there are a few items you need to purchase.
You need to get yourself a three ring binder with some paper and dividers. This is going to become your moving tool kit. Here you will be able to keep track of everything including your move expenses.
If you decide to use movers you can jot down your quotes and get pricing on your packing materials.
This notebook is going to become very important to you through your entire move the process.
Get rid of what you don’t need
There is no point in moving items that you have no use for. This is a great time to get rid of all of these. Be hard on yourself, and set those items aside that have been gathering dust for a long period of time.
Give yourself enough time so that you can either donate them or perhaps even sell them online. Now may be an ideal time to have a garage sale. This of course will depend on time constraints and the weather. This way, once you move to your new home, you will know exactly what you need to buy.
Packing up the electronics
It is really important that you prepare your electronics properly for the move. If you are using a moving company they should provide you with the proper packing materials that will be used for sensitive electronic items like your flat screen television. If you are doing this yourself, make sure that you are using quality packing material to keep them well protected.
You may want to take a picture of the components for reconnecting at your new location. Disconnect all of your cords and tie them together with an elastic, and keep them in the proper box with the appropriate, computers or electronics.
Plan for your packing
Once you have gotten rid of all the items you no longer need, take a look at the amount of items that will need to be packed, so you can make the proper purchases of packing material. You will want to make sure that the heaviest items are packed first as these will go on the truck first.
Mark each box as to what they contain and what room they will be going to. You might want to mark these on both sides of the box so you can read them carefully.
Essential box packing
For the first few days after arriving at your new home, you are going to be somewhat disorganised. You want to have one box that has all of your necessities in it for easy access. This should contain items like your dishware, dish soap and towels, easy to prepare foods, change of clothing and your toiletries. Make sure that all of the family members pack an essential box of their own.
These few hints and tips will certainly help make your move go much smoother.
