If you think your garage isn’t good for anything but car storage – think again! The humble garage can have a lot of potential and with a few simple tweaks it can become an extra living space for you and your family.

A few garage conversion ideas include:
Playroom/teen hangout
Family homes with only one living space may benefit from having a playroom or teen hangout in the garage. For older teens with musical interests, the garage can become a great practice studio, keeping noise away from the rest of the house.
If you do decide to make the garage an area for the kids to hang out just ensure it is clean and safe and if there are young kids it should be close enough to adults areas so kids can still be monitored.

Home office
With more and more people working from home, it may make sense to turn your garage space into a home office. One of the advantages of having an office in the garage is that it is separated from the rest of the house and it usually has its own entrance suitable for work-related visitors.
Just keep in mind that lighting is every bit as important in the garage as it is in your home. If you don’t have the right lighting then the garage may not make for a very conducive workspace. Make sure windows sparkle and allow natural light in.

Utility room
You may not want to store your car in the garage, but it can be a handy location for storing other items. The garage can become a functional home for things like building tools, gardening supplies, art materials or anything else you need to store.
Invest in appropriate shelving and cupboards to make the area look neat and purposeful, rather than just turning the room into a junk space.

Home gym
Are you a fitness fiend? A garage could be the best space in the house for an at-home gym. Before fitting out your gym with equipment, check that there is adequate height for overhead workouts and that the room is well ventilated.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to garage conversions but before you go out and make any major changes to your garage you will need to assess its size and whether there may be any council or building restrictions to be aware of. You should also think about where you will park the car of the garage isn’t available, as off street parking available is a valuable property asset.
In many cases though a garage can be a suitable space to turn into that extra room you dreamed of.
